Car Accident with Child Injuries
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among children in the U.S. Probably some of the worst car accidents in Oklahoma City are the ones in which children suffer injuries. Not that an adult’s life is any less important than a child’s, but considering most car accidents and most injuries that occur in them could have been avoided, seeing a child bruised and bloody, crying or unconscious, in the aftermath of an automobile collision would certainly touch anyone’s heart.
If your child has been injured in a car accident, you should reach out to an experienced Oklahoma City car accident attorney.
Preventing Children’s Injuries – Anton’s Law
PUBLIC LAW 107–318 was passed into legislation December 4, 2002 after the extreme lobbying of Journalist Autumn Skeen, who lost her 4-year-old son, Anton, in an accident. Her son’s death could have been prevented had Anton’s Law been in place before the tragic day when she strapped her son into an adult safety belt in the front seat of her car. Anton’s Law requires that children under eight years old be restrained in appropriate child restraint systems unless the child is four feet nine inches or taller.
Other Reasons for Child Injuries and Deaths in Vehicles
Since this law was enacted, the instances of children suffering injuries or dying tragic deaths in car accidents has decreased, however, lack of proper safety restraint systems is not the only cause of child injuries or deaths in car accidents. Often, it is the neglect of other drivers that leads to these car accidents, many of which could have been avoided had the other driver been following the laws of the roads. The CDC reported that from 2001 to 2010, approximately 1 in 5 child passenger death in the U.S. was due to someone who was driving while intoxicated.
